Who is Nightmare

Nightmare is a Belgian hardrockband, founded in April 2011 by Kristof ‘Krikke’ Michiels, Zan Geeraerts and Jasper Vanderheyden. This threesome had gained a lot of experience in a number of earlier projects; they figured their band deserved a really powerful name and Nightmare was born.

During the first years, there was little success and only two singles were unleashed onto the world: ‘Baby Let Go’ and ‘She Gives It All’. The former seemed to be quite popular, certainly after the appearance of its video clip.

The band went on The Pirate Rock Tour, two small tours throughout the county of Antwerp, and they definitely left their mark on ‘heavy rock’ in Antwerp.

In 2013, the first drummer left, to be replaced by the Greek ‘God of Thunder’ Vassili Golfidis. Now Nightmare really started growing. Performances, given with some big names from the Belgian rock world, were made, but especially their debut album ‘Dirt’ was the highlight of the band’s carreer.

Nightmare – Dirt

‘Dirt’ the debut album of Nightmare was released in 2015. This record was recorded in the Empyrean Studio in Mechelen. After a couple of weeks of hard work, a whopping 11 songs were recorded. A confluence of beautiful rhythmic, fast songs, incisive and sometimes brutal texts, interspersed with some softer moments. To the unexpected use of keyboard into one of the songs was added a text of striking emotional words. Listen to this album, get carried away by its imaginative and suggestive texts, and you will immediately understand why it is baptized ‘Dirt’.

As icing on the cake, the album was mixed and mastered in the legendary Sierra Studio in Athens. Before, none other than Robert Plant (ex-Led Zeppelin singer) and The Scorpions worked on their album in here. They were accompanied by Akis Golfidis, who has years of experience with producing albums of many famous bands and artists.

‘Dirt’ is available on iTunes and Google Play (Look for the band under the name ‘Nightmare BE / NightmareBE’) or on CD (to obtain at concerts).

Zan Geeraerts

Zan is a guitarist, but not just any guitarist. He was so much into it that he started playing without any musical or technical background whatsoever. After his 12th birthday, he decided that he would no longer play by ear and did some serious studies, both classical and, well, not so classical. Did I mention he sings? Yeah, he does that too.

Apparently, scratching your strings and pretending to sing is not enough to start a band, particularly when you’ve got pals who pop in and out like a bad idea after a drinking game. Then he found some guys who were more the staying kind: together with Krikke and Jasper, Nightmare BE was fathered. However, there was misfortune on the horizon: The drummer had left the band and Zan was left with a choice: Vassili Golfidis or an acoustic Trio of Troubadours with a live prerecorded drum playback. Was there really a dillema? On hearing the joyous news that The Thirsty Three acoustic band project would not go underway and an actual drummer was needed, Vassili passed out and, after recovering, the three others thoroughly checked his capabilities. Nightmare BE was really shaping up

Jasper Vanderheyden

Jasper is a genetically engineered android: his robotic nature really wanted to play drums but, when he discovered his Dad’s acoustic guitar in the attic, he heard the call of the wild, the human inside.

He was sensitized by ‘Mutter’ when Rammstein brought it out, but then was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Real Music when he discovered Queen. From one six-stringer to an other, he found he could do better if he only would listen to Frank Arras. So he went to follow courses at Guitarblast where he met Zan. Crisis was Zan’s brainchild and Jasper joined. It was the time when 80s hard rock was not yet history and Jasper developed a good feel for it.Every band has its own problems — didn't I mention the dissapearing? – and when one more member stepped out, Crisis had a, well, crisis.

It was high time to do something really smashing; With Jasper’s android supremacy and Zan's musical whimsy, the decided they wanted to do some heavier weightlifting and looked for a damn good bass guitar player.

That’s how the band met Krikke.

Kristof Krikke Michiels

Krikke doesn’t rhyme with Mickey and his world was not anywhere Disneyland either. When he started soccer and wanted to combine it with guitar, his parents said ‘no’, end of story. But Krikke is a damn fine wordsmith and a hard worker and he knew how to convince them. He set out doing good exams, pleased his Mom and Dad and worked in the greenhouses. He made some money and what do you think he spent it on? You guessed it, a donation to the ill and hungry in 3rd world countries.

Just kidding, he bought a bass guitar. The only problem was he didn’t know how to play it. When it was mentioned that this guy is tough, it was no joke. So he learned it all from his fellow guitar players in various bands: Poison Addict, No Name No Fame, Crisis… Hmm, doesn't that ring a bell?

He ran into his one-time friends Zan and Jasper again and was just in time to join the Thirsty Three Acapella Banjo project. However, it wasn't as much a success as they had expected so they went on to become the masterful hard rockers we know and love, Nightmare BE.

Vassili Golfidis

His early years are mostly a mystery but one thing that is known until today is that at age 5 he chose drums, driving the entire household stark raving mad with his noise. At the age of 8, he was sent to the music academy and his parents were finally able to resume a normal and noise-free life.

He started his first band with his brother at age 11 and, after that, he took part in another six bands in total before he hit it off on Nightmare BE. When Bent Van Dyck, one of his best friends, showed him his awesome guitar teacher, Vassili met Zan, the bands' frontman. Since the band was in need of a new drummer, Vassili was on trial for a while until Zan and the rest of the band members were convinced that he was as deranged as they were.

Thus, the drummer for Nightmare BE was baptised in sweat, tears and hard work
